Formatting Hyperlinks in Web Writing

When displaying a URL, include the full address.

For example:

http://www.somesite.com.au
http://somesite.com.au
http://support.somesite.com.au
http://1.20.255.255
ftp://www.somesite.com.au
ftp://ftp.somesite.com.au

If we consistently use www.somesite.com.au instead of http://www.somesite.com.au, readers can become confused when suddenly confronted with a different type of address.

Addresses inside sites should use prose text instead of a URL.

External Site Example
The Australian Bureau of Statistics site can be found at: http://www.abs.gov.au.

Internal Site Example
Training organisations need to undertake internal audits on a regular basis.

Breaking URLs Across Lines

Try to avoid breaking URLs across a line, even if you have to leave one line short and start a new line. If it can't be avoided, break the URL after a slash:

Try the Yahoo directory:
http://dir.yahoo.com/Government/Politics/By_Region/Countries/
Australia/States_and_Territories/Queensland/Complete_List/
